Perugia

Perugia may seem to move at the pace of a medieval village but that is part of its mystery. Perugia has a marvellously strong city life full of churches and palaces which gradually reveal themselves. Don’t just come to Perugia on a day trip because if you do you will miss out on so much of the beauty that is Perugia.
The magnificent Fontana Maggiore built between 1275 and 1278, stands in the centre of IV Novembre Square. The three basins and statues depict the mythical history of the city of Perugia. There are also Biblical representations and the three symbols of the city, the gryphon, the lion and the eagle. Restoration work means the fountain can be seen in all its glory.
San Lorenzo Cathedral although an unfinished work this by no means takes anything away from the beauty of this building. The gothic style interior has three naves divided by huge pillars. The stained glass windows are stunning and in the cloister you can see excellent art works.
The National Gallery of Umbria in Perugia has small display area which means that the artifacts are quite literally one after an other without a break. There are collections of goldsmith art, ancient graphics and topography.
The San Bernardino Oratory was built in honour of San Bernardino of Sienna. His preaching was loved by the citizens of Perugia. The glorification and miracles accrued to him are depicted in stone and marble. The altar is a sarcophagus dating back to the IV century.
