Perugia’s Jazz Festival
March 5, 2009
One thing is certain about the people of Perugia – They like their music. Every year the city hosts the Umbria Jazz Festival, which is widely acknowledged to be the largest and most important Jazz festival in Europe. Right from its inauguration in 1973, the Umbria Jazz Festival attracted an impressive string of stars to Perugia from across the globe, including Dizzy Gillespie, Sam Rivers, Herbie Hanckok, Enrico Rava, and even Miles Davis. More recent years have seen artists such as Dedee Bridgewater, Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimento, Terence Blanchard, Paolo Conte, and Burt Bacharach make appearances, thus cementing the Umbria Jazz Festival’s reputation as one of the world’s best.
So it is that for 10 days every July, the city of Perugia becomes a mecca for all music lovers, when from morning to night, in the historic centre of Perugia, hosts dozens of concerts and events and sees the whole city buzz with even more vibrancy and energy than usual.

The Vibrant Nightlife Of Perugia
February 7, 2009
Perugia is a university town and has a large student population, creating a highly vibrant nightlife. As such, you’ll find many bars scatted throughout the historic city, filled with patrons at all times of the day. Yes, plenty of drinking haunts are open for a swig anytime you fancy one.
Of course, bars come to life in stunning ways during aperitivo time, when locals and tourists begin congregating on their favourite spots for a drink and some conversation. It’s easy to get lost in the midst of people, especially when you’re in the mood for meeting new ones, as friendly faces seem to come out to the watering holes as soon as 6:00 PM beckons.
Whether you’re in the mood for classy or cheap, there’s a joint to satiate your thirst in Perugia. If you’re up for a late night cavorting, dance clubs and music bars sit side by side with cafes, offering you space until the wee hours of the morning – or more, if you’ve still got the energy.

The Cathedral of San Lorenzo – Interior
February 4, 2009
Inside Perugia’s Cathedral of San Lorenzo (Sant’Ercolano) you will find a gothic look and feel. It is divided in 3 sections by the vast arched columns and contains distinguished works of art, including Cappella del Santo Anello, preserving, according to tradition, the ring of the Virgin, the Cappella di San Bernardino; the very fine choir stalls by Giuliano da Maiano and Domenico del Tasso.
The Chapel of San Bernadino is one of the finest pieces within the cathedral. It was partly destroyed due to a fire in 1985, but some healthy restoration work has been done and it is looking as magnificent as it ever did. It alter contains one of the most important artifacts in Perugia, Federico Barocci‘s Deposition.
The bishop’s throne designed by Ciancio di Pierfrancesco is also here. Perugia’s most illustrious bishop was certainly Count Gioacchino Pecci, bishop from 1846 to 1878 when he was elected pope with the name of Leo XIII. The statue by Giuseppe Lucchetti (1892) placed in the right transept is dedicated to him. Well worth a look!
Over to the right nave is where you will see the Sacramental Chapel which was designed in 1576. Here are the remains of Pope Martin IV who died in Perugia in 1285. There is also the Baptistery Chapel which has a marvellous marble façade. Whilst in Perugia, you must stop at the Cathedral of San Lorenzo to witness this magnificent structure.

The Cathedral of San Lorenzo – Exterior
January 29, 2009
There have been many cathedrals on the site of Perugia’s current cathedral. San Lorenzo finished construction in 1490. Unlike other cathedrals, it’s situated on Perugia’s main square. There is also a museum within the walls of the cathedral which contains many valuable manuscripts, some dating as far back as the 10th century.
The exterior of Perugia’s cathedral was never quite completed for some reason – there are white and pink marble lozenges and it is possible to see where it was first tried and then either forgotten or perhaps the money for marble ran out.
There is also a statue dedicated to Pope Julius III by Vincenzo Danti which was built in 1555 – Julius is somewhat of a local hero due to restoring local government which the previous pope had abolished. The Justice Stone (Pietra della Giustizia) has an inscription from 1264 which tells of how all public debt had been repaid. This would have been something celebrate. The exterior of Perugia’s cathedral is beautiful and is well worth a look on your visit. There is so much history and you can spend many hours marveling at the dedication of the workers to this construction. A visit to Perugia would not be complete without seeing the Cathedral of San Lorenzo

Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria in Perugia are to exhibit Pintoricchio
August 17, 2008
Perugia – The exhibition at the Palazzo dei Priori in Perugia is dedicated to the artistic genius of Pintoricchio. It will be open to the general public until August 31st. Entrance to the exhibition, including a visit to the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria , allows visitors to admire all of the moveable works of art by Pintoricchio which have been found, some of which never before seen in Italy. Visitors can also admire a selection of contemporary art works. This exhibition has been organized for the 550th anniversary of the birth of this great artist from Perugia and his works on panels and his sketches have been united for the first time in a solo retrospective exhibition. This journey out to discover the talent of this refined artist of the Renaissance continues in those locations in Umbria decorated with his frescos: first of all the splendid Cappella Baglioni in Spello and then also other sites in Spoleto, Orvieto, Trevi, Citta’ di Castello and Perugia. This exhibition dedicated to Bernardino di Betto, better known as il Pintoricchio, is the first great event to be hosted in recently inaugurated halls of the Galleria Nazionale dell’ Umbria following renovation work to recuperate and enlarge its exhibition spaces. However, above all this exhibition is part of a project to maximise appreciation of the rich cultural and artistic heritage in Umbria; and it has been planned to celebrate the 550th anniversary of the birth of Pintoricchio – one of the most fascinating protagonists of the Italian Renaissance and a symbol of the city of Perugia. Following the success of the Perugino exhibition in 2004, this new exhibition represents a continuation of the initiative to promote the works of the great artists from Umbria and to draw attention – both of the public and of the national and international critics – to the artistic and cultural heritage of the region and its extraordinary diffusion across the territory.
There will also be a second section in Spello, in the Collegiata di Santa Maria Maggiore. The Cappella Baglioni, better known as the Cappella Bella, is the location of one of Pintoricchio’s most impressive masterpieces. The opening of this exhibition in Spello will also see the inauguration of a specially designed permanent illumination system to optimise the vision of this prestigious cycle of frescoes. In addition to this, a temporary educational display has been installed to provide visitors with detailed information about the historical, artistic and iconographic aspects of the paintings. This Perugia exhibition will be further enriched by regional routes and itineraries that allow visitors to discover the numerous works by Pintoricchio and other extraordinary pieces from the Renaissance period, in their original surroundings. The event has been made possible thanks to the joint commitment of the Italian Cultural Heritage Ministry, the Umbria Cultural and Landscape Heritage Regional Office and the Umbria Regional Architectural, Landscape, Historical, Artistic and Ethno-Anthropological Heritage Superintendence, the Umbria Region, the Province of Perugia, the City of Perugia, the City of Spello, the Dioceses of Foligno, the Perugia Chamber of Commerce and the Cassa di Risparmio of Perugia Foundation.
Palazzo dei Priori, hosting the exhibition, faces Piazza IV Novembre dominated by the monumental Fontana dei Pisano. Palazzo dei Priori is one of the symbols of Perugia and presents one of the most interesting examples of medieval civil architecture. Construction of this Palazzo began at the end of the 13th century and it continued on into the 14th century with the construction of the Cappella dei Priori with frescos by Benedetto Bonfigli and into the 15th century. Today it is the prestigious home of the Galleria Nazionale dell’ Umbria. The origins of this Museum are linked to the history of the Accademia del Disegno di Perugia, founded in 1573 and many of the works of art present in the collection were a part of the rich artistic assets used as teaching tools at this art academy.
