August 17, 2008
Perugia – The exhibition at the Palazzo dei Priori in Perugia is dedicated to the artistic genius of Pintoricchio. It will be open to the general public until August 31st. Entrance to the exhibition, including a visit to the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria , allows visitors to admire all of the moveable works of art by Pintoricchio which have been found, some of which never before seen in Italy. Visitors can also admire a selection of contemporary art works. This exhibition has been organized for the 550th anniversary of the birth of this great artist from Perugia and his works on panels and his sketches have been united for the first time in a solo retrospective exhibition. This journey out to discover the talent of this refined artist of the Renaissance continues in those locations in Umbria decorated with his frescos: first of all the splendid Cappella Baglioni in Spello and then also other sites in Spoleto, Orvieto, Trevi, Citta’ di Castello and Perugia. This exhibition dedicated to Bernardino di Betto, better known as il Pintoricchio, is the first great event to be hosted in recently inaugurated halls of the Galleria Nazionale dell’ Umbria following renovation work to recuperate and enlarge its exhibition spaces. However, above all this exhibition is part of a project to maximise appreciation of the rich cultural and artistic heritage in Umbria; and it has been planned to celebrate the 550th anniversary of the birth of Pintoricchio - one of the most fascinating protagonists of the Italian Renaissance and a symbol of the city of Perugia. Following the success of the Perugino exhibition in 2004, this new exhibition represents a continuation of the initiative to promote the works of the great artists from Umbria and to draw attention – both of the public and of the national and international critics - to the artistic and cultural heritage of the region and its extraordinary diffusion across the territory.
There will also be a second section in Spello, in the Collegiata di Santa Maria Maggiore. The Cappella Baglioni, better known as the Cappella Bella, is the location of one of Pintoricchio’s most impressive masterpieces. The opening of this exhibition in Spello will also see the inauguration of a specially designed permanent illumination system to optimise the vision of this prestigious cycle of frescoes. In addition to this, a temporary educational display has been installed to provide visitors with detailed information about the historical, artistic and iconographic aspects of the paintings. This Perugia exhibition will be further enriched by regional routes and itineraries that allow visitors to discover the numerous works by Pintoricchio and other extraordinary pieces from the Renaissance period, in their original surroundings. The event has been made possible thanks to the joint commitment of the Italian Cultural Heritage Ministry, the Umbria Cultural and Landscape Heritage Regional Office and the Umbria Regional Architectural, Landscape, Historical, Artistic and Ethno-Anthropological Heritage Superintendence, the Umbria Region, the Province of Perugia, the City of Perugia, the City of Spello, the Dioceses of Foligno, the Perugia Chamber of Commerce and the Cassa di Risparmio of Perugia Foundation.
Palazzo dei Priori, hosting the exhibition, faces Piazza IV Novembre dominated by the monumental Fontana dei Pisano. Palazzo dei Priori is one of the symbols of Perugia and presents one of the most interesting examples of medieval civil architecture. Construction of this Palazzo began at the end of the 13th century and it continued on into the 14th century with the construction of the Cappella dei Priori with frescos by Benedetto Bonfigli and into the 15th century. Today it is the prestigious home of the Galleria Nazionale dell’ Umbria. The origins of this Museum are linked to the history of the Accademia del Disegno di Perugia, founded in 1573 and many of the works of art present in the collection were a part of the rich artistic assets used as teaching tools at this art academy.
