Palazzo dei Priori in Perugia

Take an hour off.  Park up your hire car and take a stroll through the streets of Perugia to the famous Palazzo dei Priori.  One of the most renowned and impressive civic structures in the whole of Italy, this most striking of buildings dominates the already beautiful Perugian city centre.  Built in the middle Ages to house Perugia’s city governments, it sits commandingly on the corner of the city’s main square, which was also once Perugia’s main thoroughfare in medieval times. The Palazzo dei Priori was first begun in 1293, and later had an arcaded platform added from where important decrees could be read to the crowds.

Far from what you might expect from an administrative building, some of the carvings and stonework are worthy of some of Italy’s grandest cathedrals, such as the richly and intricately carved main doorway.  The roof too is elaborately decorated and is adorned with bronzes of Perugia’s griffin, amongst many other figures and characters from the area’s past, both mythical and real.  Plenty to see then and plenty of reason here to take a walk through Perugia’s ancient and captivating city centre.
